...it is a very important thing to understand how i transitioned from one cat to two cats...
when i first moved into my apartment complex, they were not as pet friendly as they are now. they allowed 1 cat, 2 cats, or 1 small dog and added a charge to the rent based upon what animals you have and how many there are. 1 cat = $20 extra per month, 1 dog = $30 extra per month, 2 cats = $40 extra per month.
i decided right away that i was ok paying an extra $20/month for a cat. i really wanted one and the extra cost wouldn't break the bank. i really wanted to have more than one cat, but $40 extra per month was verging on ridiculous in my opinion. lucy was aquired, i began paying extra, and a year went by...
in may 2003, i went into the leasing office to renew my lease and was told that the pet policy had been changed. there was no longer an extra fee for more than one cat -- 2 cats = $20 extra per month just as one cat did. this made me elated! i was so excited to be able to find a friend for lucy.
at this time in my life, i was dating rhino. he was a great guy, but we were having some problems; after 4 years of dating, we still didn't know where our relationship was going. he was working in st. louis the day i found out about the new kitty rules and when he came over to the apartment i gushed to him about how i was so excited to look for a new cat to join the family. rhino didn't think the idea was so hot (as if his opinion mattered) and the argument that resulted led to us breaking up that night.
...so, it is now understood that i chose sam over my boyfriend. just clarifying for those of you still lost on whether rhino is a human or not...(and sam is a cat -- ok, just checking).
during the mourning period of relationship lost, i surfed the internet endlessly looking for the cat that i wanted to have join lucy and me. i decided that i wanted a blue, boy-cat and found a couple really great shelters that had what i was looking for. i sent off a couple e-mails and waited for the response. the first response i had was from heartland humane society and the cat i had inquired about was "smokey". the lady that was fostering smokey asked if i'd like to meet him and we set up a meeting time and place to see how he took to lucy and me...
...to be continued...

I know this comment is annoying. Feel free to delete it.
what's annoying is that your comment is anonymous. :)
i'll change the post to appease the grammar nazi...
Nothing says lovin' like a cat during a breakup. :) How could rhino not understand the jubilation of your pet fee? :)
i guess i just caught him on a cranky day -- turns out i was in no mood for it either...
just more fuel to the fire of the mantra: "if you don't like what ernie likes -- pretend". ;)
