...yesterday as i was driving to work i noticed a couple standing next to their car. they were not speaking and didn't look quite as happy as the couple i found in this picture...
the girl had her back to the car and the guy faced her, standing in the street. while she was gazing intently into his face, his face was turned away with a distant look in his eyes. she had her arms wrapped around his waist, and he returned this embrace. was this couple falling in love or falling out of love...?
i'm not sure why this snapshot in time affected me so, but it has been something that i've had my mind on since then.
what were they talking about? it didn't seem to be a very happy moment in time for them, but perhaps it was...perhaps it was just tainted by the rushing traffic and shady neighborhood that they were positioned in.
could they be newfound lovers saying good-bye as the workday is set to start? or possibly they were old pros at their relationship but going through a rough patch? her smeared make-up indicated either a night slept without washing her face or a morning spent in tears...
perhaps their relationship had come to a close and they were trying to say good-bye--with finality. what if he was leaving town...new job...new life...one that could not or would not include her for the immediate future...?
whatever their conversation was about, it will stick in my mind for a long time to come. her intent gaze and his glance to the side both indicated an immense amount of emotion that was not being shown to the outside world...
i don't know them or their situation -- but i wish them both luck in life, love, and happiness. their photograph in my mind will forever tie me to their untold story.

funny how those snapshots in time play a whole story in our minds. i love people watching. from the way you described it, it didn't sound like a happy ending.
I love to people watch too. And, it's great fodder for writing stories....maybe you can finish their untold story? :)
I know exactly what happened. She drove the car with the oil light on and blew up the engine. She had been crying because of what she had done and was seeking his forgiveness. He was wondering how anyone could not know to stop driving as soon as the oil light on and was trying not to be mad at her because he knows she feels really bad as it is. ...You think she feels badly now, wait until she finds out how much it costs to replace an engine... :)
